The Papist Affair
It is with inexpressible pride that I present here the first ever appearance of Luther Arkwright in print in the exuberant, and hysterical Papist Affair!
(click on the image above to see it at full size and then click again on the right hand side to go to the next page - or go directly to page 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.)
Bryan says of the Papist Affair: "The Papist Affair was an excuse to do a "ground-level" strip in line and water-colour wash and was directly inspired by the Jerry Cornelius stories of Michael Moorcock.
After this, Arkwright took on his own personality and I developed his own milieu , but this was his very first appearance.
Now, just having finished the new Arkwright graphic novel, Heart of Empire, I realise that he, like Chester, will never be far from my side." - this is from the introduction to the reprinted edition of Brainstorm.
I also added the Papist Affair to the huge pile of comics available for free download, which Bryan was kind enough to give permission to put together to keep spirits up during the coronavirus lockdown.
