Luther Arkwright

This is to me the definitive image of Luther: this picture that was on the back cover of Issue 5 of the Valkyrie Press series of the Adventures of Luther Arkwright ("The Theatre of Cruelty")

Luther and Rose outside Crystal Palace

This is the cover to one of the famous Proutt exploding editions of The Adventures of Luther Arkwright.

The strange thing is that I never even knew this cover existed until Bryan showed it to me recently, and I thought I was a Talbot completist!

  • Brilliant Depravities... A review of the Adventures of Luther Arkwright by Harry Payne: "Above all, this is a work which demands of its readers that they think for themselves, and for that alone, if nothing else, Bryan and those who have supported him in this labour of love have earned my grateful thanks."

  • Michael Moorcock's introduction to the Adventures of Luther Arkwright.

  • Richard Bruton over at Forbidden Planet also reviewed Arkwright: "That it still, some 31 years after initial publication, stands up as both a masterpiece of sci-fi AND of experimentation in the narrative art of comics is testament to the vision and skill of it’s author."

  • The Page 45 review by Stephen: "This is a work that is rich in texture, vast in scope and charged with sexual energy. It's also incredibly dense in its truest sense, for it could have been expanded into four times its length with no filler whatsoever."
  • Also see the Papist Affair - the first ever appearance of Luther Arkwright in print!
