Armed with Madness - the trailer!

This short but perfectly-formed trailer has been released to promote the new graphic biography by Mary M Talbot and Bryan Talbot, Armed With Madness: The Surreal Leonora Carrington. Directed and edited by designer Jordan Smith, it features music composed by Gary Lloyd.

Jordan has collaborated with Bryan before, notably producing the cover to Alice in Sunderland, based on Bryan's pencil rough.

Gary, who in the past has worked on projects with Alan Moore and Iain Banks among others, composed the music for the modern dance performance piece When You Light a Candle You Also Cast a Shadow, featuring a poetry cycle written by Mary. The trailer soundtrack includes a specially recorded cameo by composer-musician Gary Carpenter playing the same Nordic Harp that he used for Willow's Song in the film The Wicker Man (1973). The vocals are by Isabelle Mohan.

Armed With Madness: The Surreal Leonora Carrington is published in April in the USA and May in the UK by Self-Made Hero.

Bryan Talbot and the locations of One Bad Rat

The Lake District is Bryan’s favourite place, and he spent his childhood exploring it. Many years later he used some of his most personally significant spots as locations for his harrowing graphic novel about the effects of child abuse, The Tale of One Bad Rat.

This film was put together by the Lakes International Comics Festival.

Also see our own page where I visited some of the locations in The Tale of One Bad Rat and took photos to compare them to Bryan's drawings.

Bryan is interviewed on the 2000ad thrill-cast!

Bryan has done a lot of work for the amazing 2000 AD - all the way back to Nemesis the Warlock - and they take the chance today to interview him. Also covered is pretty much the whole of Bryan's career - Alice in Sunderland, Luther Arkwright and Heart of Empire, Grandville and the Tale of One Bad Rat are all discussed in some detail.

It's always good to see an interview where the interviewer is so knowledgable about the subject matter - and also obviously a huge fan!

Watch the video above, or download it on Soundcloud at the 2000 AD thrill-cast site.

Not quite videos, but still in the general "audio-visual" area: Bryan was on the BBC Radio 4 show Saturday Live on Saturday August 14th 2010 in the "Inheritance Tracks" section. Guests present a track that takes them back to their childhood and one that they'd like to pass on to their children, so see if you can guess what he chooses!

We have the segment as an MP2 file and also as MP3 file for your listening pleasure, and amazingly enough the entire show is still available on the BBC site to listen to.

Bryan and Mary were also on national BBC radio on Monday May 9th 2016 talking about the Red Virgin and the Vision of Utopia: listen to them on the BBC site on Free Thinking on Radio 3 and also on Front Row, Radio 4.
